on SHARP ER-A520 and ER-A530 PDS 2 PROGRAMMING THE REGISTER
CAUTION! Make the following changes to the cash register only with the permission and
participation of the store manager or owner. Use caution not to change any other setting.
VRX Company cannot be responsible for the changes to the settings of the cash register. A
cash register technician may be required to assist with the proper system settings, in event of
mistake of mis-programming This document was compiled from SHARP provided user manuals
to assist end-users in the setup of the SHARP cash register for compatibility with the VR2004
text inserter.
1 Preparing to program
1.1 Equipment Required
A SHARP ER-A520 or ER-A530 Electronic Cash Register
The Manager’s Key (stamped “MA”)
An RS232 Cable or A straight-through CAT5 cable, with adapters
A VR2004 text inserter (or an appropriate SHARP printer, or a flow control loopback adapter
1.2 Attaching the peripheral device
IMPORTANT: Once programming has begun, the cash register will not function unless a
peripheral device is attached to the designated port, ensure that there is a device (such as a text
inserter with handshake loopback adapter, printer, or handshake loopback adapter) attached
to the serial port that you would like to use for print data sending before continuing.
1.3 Entering programming mode
Insert the manager’s key, and turn to the 8-o’clock (“PGM2”) position
2 Programming the register
NOTE: The text inserter in the VR2004 SHARP PDS kit is pre-programed for 9600 baud, with
7 data bits, one stop bit, and even parity, these instruction detail how to set the register to these
same parameters.
In the event of a MISOPERATION or ENTRY ERROR, press the [CL] key twice to clear the
error.
2.1 Assigning the serial port
NOTE: Each serial port may only be assigned to ONE device at a time, the register will fail
with an “ENTRY ERROR” if an attempt is made to assign a device to an already used serial port.
1. Select a free serial port to use for print data sending, the serial port closest to the customer
is port 1, and the one nearer the operator is port 2.
